Bakelite is a moulded synthetic resin that is characterized by excellent dimensional and temperature stability (unlike plastics, for example), and has an enormous insulating capacity against electric current. Bakelite began to replace porcelain electrical accessories in the early 1930s. Older bakelite was brown, brown-black or black, but from the 40s and 50s it was also available in white.

The double dimmer has a so-called crown function, which means that it is used to dim two separate light sources. The supplied dimmer switch is placed in appliance boxes in the wall.

For surface mounting on wood paneling or other flammable material, an insulating plastic base plate should be used as additional fire protection.
