During the 18th and early 19th centuries, it is believed that this particular shade of light brick red was the most common among red-colored buildings. It was often combined with oil-painted details such as window and door frames in light gray instead of unbroken white.

The red color comes from burnt mining slag or clay containing iron oxide. Colors other than red were also commonly used as sludge color until the beginning.
